LG, Samsung kick off Mobile World Congress with new smartphones

A slew of new smartphones and tablets have debuted at the first official day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where dozens of tech companies and telcos are showing off the latest in mobile technology and gadgets.
Companies including VoIP leader Skype and chip manufacturer Intel have made major announcements, including the introduction of a new partnership which will see Skype join up with thousands of wireless operators as part of a hot spot service.
LG Electronics made some of the first major announcements, launching the new 3D Optimus smartphone and the Optimus tablet.
The major focus is 3D content, with both devices running the Android operating system, film in 3D and ability to display 3D video. The company says you won’t need glasses to watch 3D content.
The Optimus 3D smartphone features a 4.3 inch display, a 1Ghz processor, two five-megapixel cameras and a 3D hotkey. 3D clips will play back in 720p and normal clips will play back in 1080p. The gadget comes with Wi-Fi, USB syncing, 8GB of internal memory and HDMI connections.
LG is focusing on the speed of the device, given that 3D content requires so much memory power.
“Unlike other single-channel, single-memory, dual-core smartphones, the LG Optimus 3D offers significant performance benefits as a result of the simultaneous — and thus faster — transfer of data between the dual-core and dual-memory,” a company spokesman said.
“Users can browse web pages, multitask between programs, play games at a higher frame rate and enjoy movies more smoothly and longer than ever before.”
The Optimus Pad is LG’s first entry into the tablet market. Like its smartphone companion, the Pad can record and display 3D content on the 8.9-inch display.
The gadget features 1280x768 WXGA resolution with a 1GHz dual core processor. You will need glasses to watch the 3D content on the Pad and the company said it now has a partnership with YouTube that will allow users to upload content to the site straight from both devices.
YouTube now has a dedicated channel for the 3D content.
"We are already focusing all our resources on delivering the widest variety of smart devices for all types of customers," Park Jong-seok, head of LG's mobile division, said. "This will be a critical year for LG and a lot of eyes are upon (whether) we'll succeed. We don't intend to let them down."
Chip manufacturer Intel made a number of presentations, saying it will be developing new mobile chips that will handle faster speeds.
Competitor Qualcomm made a similar announcement, showing off its quad-core SnapDragon processor for mobiles.
Samsung showed off its new smartphone, the Galaxy S II, which features a 4.3 inch screen and runs on Android 2.3. The camera has eight megapixels, LED flash and a front-camera with two megapixels.
Wi-Fi is included along with support for NFC, which Samsung says can be used for sharing files in close proximity to other users.
The company said it wants to sell more units of the device than the original Galaxy S, which has shipped 10 million units.
"With the Galaxy S II Samsung wants to set the new standard of quality viewing on mobile, powerful performance, and slim and modern design,” a company spokesman said.
Skype said it had expanded its Skype Access program to thousands of new wireless hot spots, including many in Australia. The service allows users to pay for access by the minute, rather than by the half-hour or hour, as hot-spot vendors usually charge.
The company announced a range of new partnerships that will allow telco carriers to offer Skype services on their phones.
“We see a growing demand for differentiated services from mobile operators across the world,” Russ Shaw, vice president and general manager Skype mobile, said.
“Our mobile operator program will give operators in emerging markets the possibility to tap into the global Skype community while providing a great user experience on a variety of mobile handsets."
New reports emerging from the MWC have indicated that Apple is in talks with Samsung to buy $US7.8 billion worth of components including displays, app processors and flash chips to be used in future models of iPhones and iPads.

Doro UK Reveals New Range of Easy-to-Use Mobiles

Doro continues to break new ground in the easy-to-use and senior-focused mobile phone market. Four new models will be revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. Just like the current range of award-winning Doro mobiles, the new handsets have all been developed with ease-of-use at their core by renowned design firm Ergonomidesign.

Chris Millington, MD of Doro UK & Ireland commented on the launch of the new range: "We are previewing our 5th generation of Doro easy-to-use mobiles before launching them in the UK & Ireland as we want customers to see what is coming. The new range further builds upon our successes to date and helps us introduce new ideas and business options for networks.”

The new handsets have a few key functions not yet seen in Doro’s handsets before and remain true to the Swedish company’s design ethos – the focus has been on simplifying technology. The range includes features such as an easy to use Camera, 3G technology and a GPS enabled phone utilised to send a location when the assistance call button is pressed.

Other improvements across the range include extra loud, clearer and more amplified sounds. High contrast displays, with large easy-to-read text, and adjustable fonts. Doro has also included direct SMS access keys meaning text messaging is quicker and more simplified. The phones all have three quick-dial keys for easy calling and integrated hearing loops (HAC M3/T4).

“We’ve listened to feedback from our network partners, retail customers, distributors and the end users of our existing mobiles in order to create the new range. These exciting models include new technologies and features that we’ve simplified. Our menu system continues to be easy to navigate and the Doro mobile environment remains customisable – meaning a user can hide functions they don’t want to use. Most importantly the new range continues to offer the brilliantly simple mobile experience that Doro products are famed for.” Millington concluded.

There are four easy-to-use mobiles in the new PhoneEasy 600 series and further details will revealed as they become available.

Mounted mobiles only

READING or sending a text message while driving will be illegal from March 1 under new road laws regarding mobile phones.

The new laws bring WA into line with other States.

Police Minister Rob Johnson said driver distraction was responsible for about a third of serious crashes on WA roads.

From next month, drivers will only be able to use a mobile phone to make or receive a call if the phone is secured in a mounting on the vehicle, or if a hands-free device is used.

It will be an offence to create, send or look at a text or video message, email or similar communication while driving.

But GPS functions on mobiles may be used so long as the phone is secured in its mounting bracket and the driver does not touch it at any time.

Other visual display units like GPS or navigational devices must be secured in approved mounting or be an integrated part of the vehicle’s design.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 8520

BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520:
T-Mobile's newest bargain BlackBerry phone is surprisingly capable and offers some new features, like an optical trackpad. Is it really a great deal? Find out in our BlackBerry Curve 8520 review.

Somebody forgot to tell the BlackBerry Curve 8520 that it's supposed to be a budget BlackBerry device. Sure, the phone lacks some of the high-end features of other BlackBerry phones, like a high-res screen or GPS navigation, but the Curve 8520 does right all of the things that we expect from a BlackBerry. For e-mail and messaging, it's just as fast and well organized as any other BlackBerry phone. We even like the design. Though it's supposed to be low-end, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 packs some new additions we've never seen on a BlackBerry, like a responsive optical trackpad button and real multimedia playback controls. The keyboard is solid and we rarely noticed a dip in performance compared to more advanced BlackBerry phones. Plus, on T-Mobile's network, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is capable of cut-rate calling with it's UMA Hotspot @Home calls over your Wi-Fi network. In the end, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is an easy phone to recommend, especially since Amazon is offering the phone at launch for only a penny.

We liked the snappy interface, with an improved look from T-Mobile, and Microsoft's newest mobile Web browser on board, equipped with Flash Lite support. Plus, for business users, there's hardly a better tool for scheduling and productivity options. The T-Mobile Dash 3G also comes with a great software package, especially for messaging fans and GPS navigators. Still, the phone comes up short in multimedia capabilities, and other T-Mobile smartphones with Wi-Fi also get HotSpot @Home calling, a convenient option for cheap calls, especially in dead zones. T-Mobile hasn't seen a Windows Mobile phone this compelling in a long while, and the T-Mobile Dash 3G is definitely a slim smartphone that's worth a look.

Pros: Stylish, slim business device. Solid call quality and great battery life. Great instant messaging options.

Cons: Trackball was unresponsive, even cranked to highest sensitivity. Button and keyboard layout awkward. 3G service area still growing.

Its specialized features include it extremely user-friendly is its optical joystick for smooth navigation, touch-sensitive Home, Menu, Back and Search keys. Music

To keep the user entertained, the HTC Droid Incredible comes preloaded with advanced integrated media player that very well supports numerous music formats. There is an integrated FM radio with RDS. It can be directly played on speakerphone.

The Reasons Why So Many People Continue To Purchase Blackberry Devices

Despite the fact that there are now many mobile devices to choose from the Blackberry remains a firm favourite. A lot of the credit for this has to go to the makers of this device who have managed to stay firm to their original aims while also constantly innovating. Some of the reasons why the Blackberry is still head and shoulders above other mobile devices are listed below.

1.The Blackberry is very secure; this means that your personal data is fully protected. Identity theft is a crime which seems to be on the increase and many of us are worried about transferring our personal information online or wirelessly incase it falls into the wrong hands. The Blackberry devices rely on the most sophisticated encryption technology to ensure that other people cannot access our data. This is really important because of the high incidence of identity theft these days.

2.The really good thing about the pearl 3g is that the makers really seem to take their customers seriously and understand their needs we are all unique. This is the reason why the makers have developed devices which will cater for a variety of people from all different backgrounds. There is almost certain to be a Blackberry that will fit your needs perfectly.

3.The products created by Blackberry are constantly improved and new models are the perfect example of how the makers continue to innovate and improve. Blackberry have recently introduced their newest creation, the Blackberry Pearl 3G; this stunning new device is amazing as it has all the previous features and a few new ones as well such as GPS and wireless connection.

4.Blackberry is responsive to any criticism and takes the view of the customer seriously. When a minority of customers complained that the keyboard setup was confusing they produced a new keyboard to please this group. This is great that this company view all their customers happiness as important and don’t concentrate on just pleasing the majority

Why Everybody Is Talking About Cell Phones…The Simple Truth Revealed

Many people admit that they encounter more difficulty in picking a brand of cell phone to buy, than in learning how to use the cell phone. Lots of people continue to get new cell phones and as a result manufacturers keep producing new models into the market. Because of this a cell phone that popular today is no longer popular tomorrow.

Many modern cell phones are now able to handle tasks like videos, music downloads, cameras, picture messaging and internet browsing. It is generally accepted that future cell phone models will have better functionalities than their predecessors.

And one really important thing to bear in mind with mobile cell phones is the amazing variety of options that they afford you when it comes to being out and not being tied down to the office. It truly is amazing and a cause for great wonder.

If you are looking for information on any subject under the sun, cell phones inclusive, no information tool can rival the internet in terms of provision of up-to-date answers to your enquiries. You will see plenty resources, websites, and adverts on cell phones online. During the process of going through the many cell phones related sites, you will no doubt be more informed about cell phones and thus be able to make informed decisions.

LG Lotus mobile

The LG Lotus is about as smart as a phone gets before we call it a smartphone, thanks mostly to Sprint's excellent new One Touch menu application. Despite its haunting resemblance to a compact makeup mirror, we even like the form factor, as it provides a nice, comfortable QWERTY keyboard and keeps a classy look. The external screen is unfortunately an afterthought, even with the dedicated music keys, and call quality could have been much better. But for dedicated messaging fans, even those with corporate e-mail to read, this phone provides an interesting alternative to the more complicated smartphone set. Plus, with access to Google Docs, a capable (though not desktop-grade) Web browser and tethered modem support, maybe this phone is even smarter than we thought. Knock $100 off the price, and we'll take two. Release: October 2008. Price: $100.

Pros: One Touch is great looking and convenient. Keyboard is tall and comfortable. Capable Web browser. Surprisingly good (and corporate) messaging options.

Cons: Call quality isn't great. Interface could react more quickly to navigation. Camera is lousy. Phone is pricey.
                       Interface design - Very good

Sprint's new One Touch menu app is a pleasure to use, and very useful, to boot. Basically, the app includes a menu bar, or "carousel," at the bottom of the screen. This carousel is made up of "tiles," each of which can access an app, provide information or jump to a specific phone setting. There is a tile for Web browsing that lets you jump right to the address bar or your bookmarks. CNN and the Weather Channel each get a tile, as do the Sprint Music player and Sprint Navigation.

Tiles can be moved around and edited, and the carousel can hold up to 15 different tiles, including one tile that is simply a shortcuts menu and another that offers personalization options for the One Touch app. The One Touch  can be a bit sluggish, and if you load up your home screen with the full complement of tiles it can be a pain to get from one side of the list to the other. However, the entire system is very good looking and offers more customization and convenience than you'll find on any other carrier's phones. While AT&T and verizon Wireless are still trying to get their 5-year old icon menus to fit onto today's phones, Sprint is offering something new and smart.

Calling - Good

The LG Lotus had some nice calling options, helped along by some of the advanced features inherent in the One Touch app, but ultimately we were disappointed with the sound and call quality. On our end, calls sounded a bit distant, even with the volume cranked up to maximum. Callers reported a somewhat tinny sound, with static during calls, especially in the pauses between words. Sprint claims about 5.5 hours of talk time, and we got about that in our calling tests. Reception was strange, but not in a bad way. Actually, we found the LG Lotus roaming a bit more than we expected, but it still held onto 3-4 bars, even when those bars weren't coming from a Sprint cell tower.

Camera - Mediocre:

The camera on the LG Lotus was unimpressive; standard cameraphone fare. The 2-megapixel shooter is poorly placed, too, on the lip of the external flap. This made self portraits difficult to line up, as the camera didn't use the external screen as a viewfinder. We'd like to see a lot of improvements, including auto focus, a self portrait mirror and perhaps an LED lamp, for starters. Photo management was fairly good, with plenty of messaging options for pictures as well as some presets for uploading pics to sharing and buying sites.

How To Take Care Of Your Blackberry

If you have a blackberry pearl 3g device, then you will likely be happy with your purchase. Blackberry are made to be durable and last a long time but you do need to make sure you take care of it. Here are just a few tips to help you take care of your Blackberry.

Many people that have a tracker ball on their Blackberry find that problems develop because of it. On those devices that do have the tracker ball it will be needed for almost every application. So if you have problems with this part of your phone then you will have difficulty using the Blackberry. Never let dust build up in and around the tracker ball and try to keep it clean at all times. You can reduce wear and tear on the tracker ball by getting into the habit of using the enter key instead of the tracker ball. Fortunately the manufacturers of the Blackberry have tackled the problem of the tracker ball and have now replaced it with an optical mouse on their new model.

                                   1. To prevent your Blackberry from finding itself in the urinal or sinking to the bottom of the toilet pan, it is best to avoid using it when you go to the bathroom. Every year there are many Blackberry devices that lost this way.

                                 2. You need to protect the device from extremes of hot and cold as this can cause damage.

3.Always make sure that your screen is protected if you are placing your Blackberry into your handbag or another carrier. If your phone is sitting in your bag along with other sharp items such as keys or a tweezers for example, then it could easily end up with a scratched screen.

4.If you want to extend the battery life of your device remember to turn it off when you are not going to be using it for awhile.

These are just a few examples of how to look after your Blackberry. And with any luck you will get more from this device by following the advice above.
