Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type (Unlocked)

Nokia X3-02

Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The X3-02's design is one of its best qualities—that is, if you appreciate small, slim phones, and don't need a QWERTY keyboard. The X3-02 measures 4.2 by 1.9 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs just 2.8 ounces. It's made of good quality matte plastic, and comes in dark gray. At first glance, it's almost impossible to figure out how Nokia got the phone so small. And then it hits you: the zero key is off to the right, instead of below the other nine number keys. I never got used to this during the review period. Aside from that quirk, the numeric keypad is easy to dial numbers on, and I could text relatively quickly (T9-style). Thanks to its small dimensions and big buttons (hardware and touch), this phone is exceptionally easy to use one-handed.

It has 2.4-inch, 240-by-320-pixel display is on the large side for a small phone. The plastic resistive display is bright and colorful, but Nokia's venerable font looked a little blocky. The haptic feedback was a misfire; it often trigged multiple times, even when I wasn't touching the screen. Worse still, during calls it triggered repeatedly, causing little vibration sensations on my cheek. Eventually I turned it off altogether.

Home Screen and Apps
The X3-02 is a Symbian Series 40 6th edition device. The home screen is configurable, but not in the usual sense; there's only one home screen pane with four shortcut sections. You can configure the shortcuts to do different things, but the result always looks cluttered and messy. The main menu contains just nine icons, but there are hidden submenus everywhere; this is a Symbian phone, after all.

The WebKit browser does a good job rendering WAP and WebKit pages, but desktop sites take too long to load. There's no multi-touch; zooming in takes multiple steps and is quite jerky. Combine it with the small, low-resolution screen, and this really isn't much of a Web browsing phone. You can download free and paid apps from Nokia's Ovi Store, which Nokia is in the process of rebranding to… something. The store is divided into subcategories, including free and paid apps, but it's sluggish and difficult to use.

Firmware updates are supposedly available over the air in Settings, but apparently not for my review model. I saw numerous connectivity errors all over the place, from the Settings menu to the Ovi Store to the email app. This was despite having strong HSDPA signal, a solid Wi-Fi connection, and no problems with voice calls. Assuming your data connection works, you can check Facebook and Web mail accounts, and chat over IM with most major services including Google Talk. There's no GPS, though.

Nokia unveils new smartphone

Nokia Smart phone

Nokia unveiled its latest smartphone, N9, at the Nokia Connections 2011 on Tuesday. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said the phone, which was to be launched later this year, would be based on the Windows Mobile platform. He said the price of the phone would be revealed closer to the launch.

Mr. Elop said Nokia's smartphones would henceforth be based on the Windows Mobile platform, while the Symbian platform would be used for lower-end phones. “We would offer continued support, up to at least 2016, for the Symbian-based phones,” Mr. Elop said. He said 10 new phones based on the Symbian operating system would be launched soon.

Arguing his case for Nokia's continued support for Symbian, he said, “Ninety per cent of our consumers cannot afford a smartphone. We also realise that there is a gap in terms of access to the Internet.”

He said Nokia's promotion of the Symbian Anna reflected the company's commitment to the platform. He said Anna had an improved browser, which had been deployed on N8. He said that maps had been integrated with Anna to offer a richer experience. He said Symbian would be a crucial element in Nokia's efforts to reach out to the next billion.

Mary McDowell, Executive Vice-President, Mobile Phones, unveiled a new dual SIM phone, Nokia C2-03, which offers maps stored on the device.

She said the phone used cell tower location capabilities instead of GPS. The quality of web applications enabled users to enjoy a richer experience, she said.

Demonstrating the N9 smartphone, Marko Ahtisaari, Senior Vice-President, Design, said, “The future of touch is beyond the screen.” The N9 reflected this, he said. The device will have near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, which will enable the pairing of the device to speakers and other devices. N9, which uses a Carl Zeiss 8 megapixel camera, will be available in three colours — black, blue and cyan-magenta. Nokai also announced the launch of a speaker with NFC capability, enabling it to be paired to a mobile phone such as the N9 when it becomes available.

HP TouchPad Release Date Revealed on Amazon

HP TouchPad Release

After a splashy launch earlier this year, the HP TouchPad has remained conspicuously absent from the current tablet crush. Mind you, that wasn't entirely unexpected--the company never did name a timeline beyond "summer" at that launch event, and it was only in March that CEO Leo Apotheker mentioned June as the tablet's release date. Now, we have two leaks online indicating that July 17 may be the big unveil.

Amazon's TouchPad product page still lacks any availability info, and simply has a sign-up to be notified by e-mail when the TouchPad becomes available. But do a search on Amazon for "HP TouchPad" and you'll find a teaser that says the WebOS-based tablet will be released July 17. This follows leaked tips on Engadget indicating a $600 32GB TouchPad coming to OfficeMax on the 17th.

If July 17 is indeed the date, then it's a bit later than Apotheker originally noted. But it also tracks with Apotheker's recent comments at All Things Digital's D9 conference, about not releasing the TouchPad until its ready. Not rushing is a good call by HP; we've seen plenty of rushed tablets this year, led by RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook.

The big question, though, remains whether as much as five months after it was first introduced, can the HP TouchPad still wow consumers and compete with the current generation of tablets? Remember that HP's TouchPad launch was before the slim and sexy iPad 2 was announced; and it was before the wave of Android 3.x Honeycomb tablets washed ashore. Even after the launch, I questioned whether HP had done enough to compete with Apple and the Android Tablet Army; now, after the release of Apple iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the more urgent that question feels. The answer will have to wait until TouchPad ships. Apparently, soon.

Evo 3D 4G
HTC's Evo 3D 4G sports a 4.3-inch, quarter high-definition (qHD) display with 960 x 540 resolution, says Sprint. This stereoscopic upgrade to the HTC Evo 4G is said to let users view content in 3D without requiring special 3D glasses.

The handset (pictured at right) drew rave reviews at the CTIA show in March, when it was announced under the name "Evo 3D." The name has now been expanded to show off the phone's 4G WiMAX connection.

Powered by the new 1.2GHz, dual-core version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Evo 3D 4G ships with a 1GB RAM and 4GB internal flash memory. The phone also has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and dual five-megapixel cameras that can be used in unison to take stereoscopic 3D pictures, says Sprint.

The 5.0 x 2.6 x 0.48-inch phone weighs six ounces and runs on a 1730mAh battery, says the carrier. Other features are said to include 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, and HDMI connections.

The Evo 3D 4G is further equipped with a microSD slot, 3.5mm headset jack, micro-USB port, and FM radio, says Sprint. The phone is also said to feature a digital compass and a full slate of sensors.

Evo View 4G
The Evo View 4G is more or less the HTC Flyer tablet the company unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February. The View 4G (pictured at left) also offers the same HTC Scribe digital pen accessory, which lets users draw on and mark up documents or web pages, including highlighting documents, circling and notating parts of web pages, and even switching colors.

Fitted with a seven-inch, 1024 x 600 resolution display, the tablet is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The Evo View 4G supplies 1GB RAM and 32GB of internal flash memory, as well as a microSD slot, says Sprint.

The tablet is said to offer a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera and a single five-megapixel rear-facing camera. The Evo View 4G is further equipped with 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, and GPS, says Sprint.

Like the Evo 3D, the tablet can operate on Sprint's 3G and 4G WiMAX networks. Other features are said to include a 3.5mm headset jack, micro-USB port, a digital compass and the usual sensors.

Measuring 7.7 x 4.4 x 0.5 inches, the Evo View 4G weighs 14.9 ounces (421.8 grams), says Sprint. The tablet is said to run on a 4000mAh battery.
